P. 4
Introduction 1
Chapter 1 of this textbook examines the profession of medical interpreting
in the United States. It offers an overview of the history and current state
of the profession, minimum U.S. competency requirements for interpreters
in the field and certification.
Chapter 1 also examines the nine ethical principles in A National Code of
Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care published by the National Council on
Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). These nine principles have helped to
provide a solid foundation for much of medical interpreting in the United
States. This chapter considers how at least two of these nine principles
are often considered somewhat controversial, both within and outside the
United States: cultural awareness and advocacy.
This chapter closes with a focus on how to assess and improve one’s
performance as an interpreter through self-recording and reflective practice.
