I MARRIED A DICK DOCTOR WHO FIXES WOMEN TOO
currently with finding answers to this horrific disease. If the
blood test and symptoms and rectal exam cannot detect prostate
cancer, what is being done to solve this health crisis? The Dick
Doctor said science is coming up with many approaches to
solving this and there are hundreds of millions of dollars being
spent in the hope of early identification with this disease.
Free PSA (fPSA)tests are some of the newest approaches to
detecting prostate cancer, which is somewhat of a complicated
approach, but also has many false negatives. There is another
method called PSA velocity, which looks at the rate of rise for the
PSA and is done about every six months. You measure the PSA
velocity, which is essentially the PSA divided by the prosthetic
volume or the size of the prostate, and that has some hope for
identifying cancer. There is also a “super sensitive” PSA that is
more likely to possibly detect cancer. The verdict is still out on
that and is not widely available yet. There is a urine test called
a PCA3 that is also available, but not widely used yet. You can
ask your urologist which test may be best for you.
There are two common causes for a falsely elevated PSA.
The first one is prostatitis where inflammation of the prostate
causes PSA to leak out and give you a high PSA result. The
second reason for a falsely elevated PSA is if the patient has
a PSA done within 30 days of a prostatitis, Foley catheter,
or colonoscopy. These items may likely cause the PSA to be
abnormal. However, a referral to a urologist for those reasons
does not warrant a prostate biopsy. A waiting period of 30 days
is warranted to allow the PSA to come back to the level it was
prior to the cause of the rise. If it is still high after 30 days,
