Tatum is the youngest person to ever win an Academy Award, winning at age 10 for her
performance in Paper Moon (1973) opposite her father, Ryan O’Neal. But her childhood
experiences were far from normal as she was the daughter of very famous movie stars in Los
Angeles. Her mother was actress Joanna Moore who went into a gradual but deep decline
after her divorce from O’Neal. Depression set in and she developed a severe amphetamine
and alcohol addiction. Multiple arrests over time for drunk driving (one much later resulted
in the loss of three fingers) led to her losing custody of her children in 1970. In her book,
Tatum detailed that she had been through hunger, neglect, underage drinking, underage
driving, car crashes, suicide attempts, and had a history of drug addiction.
